DHA (Dihydroxyacetone, AKA glycerone) is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin.
How Does it Work?
Dihydroxyacetone is a ketone that reacts with the amino acids on the surface of your skin, specifically the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis), to create a tan-like effect.
The artificial tan takes 2 to 4 hours to begin appearing on the skin surface, and will continue to develop over a 24 hour period.
Once the darkening effect has occurred, the tan will not sweat off or wash away with soap or water. It will fade gradually over 3 to 10 days. Exfoliation, prolonged water submersion, or heavy sweating can lighten the tan, as these all contribute to rapid dead skin cell exfoliation (the dead skin cells are the tinted portion of the sunless tan).
EcoCert
EcoCert, a European body that certifies products to its "EcoCert Natural and Organic Cosmetic Standard" issued a clarification asserting that it does not certify "organic DHA". Specifically, they objected to the use of terms such as “Eco Certified (Eco-Cert) organic DHA”, “Organic EcoCert-certified DHA”, etc.
There are at least a dozen "organic" standards with considerably varying degrees of rigidity. EcoCert was one of the first such efforts. An organic standard must address every step in the creation of a product from how it was grown, handled, processed and manufactured. As such they become quite complex.
There are a number of tanning solutions that claim a number of natural or organic ingredients. But, we know of no instance where the product as a whole has been submitted for organic certification under any standard. Lacking certification, the value of these claims to you rests with your trust in the particular brand.
